Full title - UNIVERSITY SERIES. HOLMES' FIFTH READER; CONTAINING FRESH SELECTIONS IN PROSE AND VERSE FROM STANDARD WRITERS, WITH BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES, AND AN INTRODUCTORY TREATISE ON THE PRINCIPLES OF ENUNCIATION AND ELOCUTION. UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF GEORGE F. HOLMES, LL.D., OF THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA. Ex-university library copy. 408 pages. Hardcover: H 19cm x L 12.5cm. Black leather spine scuffed with horizontal tear just below upper third; chipped and worn spine ends now fairly even with the text block's top and bottom edges; some flaking to spine's otherwise still easily legible gilt stamping; brown pebble cloth boards worn at corners; library shelf designation handwritten in white ink at front board's top left. Marbled edges toned. Library bookplate on front pastedown; ink inscription from a Cottondale, Alabama resident dated 1880 on front free endpaper; library stamps and markings on pages 2, 3, and 51 but with no other institutional markings readily apparent upon a cursory perusal; slender residue from a melted rubber band on pages 120-121 the partial removal of which has caused a chip and some text loss to both pages 119-122; slender chip to creased top corner of pages 119-120 as well; some toning and foxing throughout. Binding is firm. Copyright date on page 2 specifies 1870 (no date on title page) but it seems likely that the book's actual publishing date probably aligns closer to the 1880 date of the aforementioned inscription. Born in British Guyana, George Holmes lived in England and Canada before moving to the United States in 1838 employed primarily as a teacher in Virginia, Georgia, and South Carolina during which time he also studied law. In 1845 Holmes accepted a professorship at Richmond College (now University of Richmond) and before moving on to the College of William and Mary in 1847. Holmes served as the first President of the University of Mississippi at Oxford from 1848-1849 but thereafter returned to Virginia engaging in various literary pursuits before joining the faculty at the University of Virginia in 1857.…
