About this Item

Description:

347pp. plus twenty-five plates including two frontispieces. Publisher's cream buckram, front board ruled in black with gilt title, spine gilt. Moderate wear and staining to binding, joints loosening but holding; light foxing and tanning throughout, occasional light tidelines to upper right corner of text. Good. Polley's classic account of the famed Texas Brigade during the Civil War, with which he served for most of the war. In his review of the book, noted Texas historian Charles W. Ramsdell wrote, "Mr. Polley has executed his commission most admirably; the volume is well conceived and well written. The greater part of the story is compiled from the memories and diaries of the author and his surviving comrades, but it is substantiated by the official records as far as have been preserved. Naturally enough, the narrative reflects the experiences of the private in the ranks more than that of the officer, and is not the less interesting for doing that. The author's happy style has made the book very readable, very unlike the great bulk of regimental and brigade histories that are content with little more than muster rolls and the bare recital of marches and battles and losses." General John Bell Hood commanded the brigade for less than six months, but his name stuck with the group, which was made of the 1st, 4th, and 5th Texas infantries, and the 18th Georgia Infantry. The Brigade served primarily with the Army of Northern Virginia, and distinguished themselves at the Seven Days' Battles, Gettysburg, and during the Wilderness campaign. They were with Gen. Lee when he surrendered at Appomattox. HOWES P465. KRICK 401. BASIC TEXAS BOOKS 165. NEVINS I, p.147. Charles W. Ramsdell, Review of HOOD'S TEXAS BRIGADE. in QUARTERLY OF THE TEXAS STATE HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION, Vol. 15.1 (1911), pp.90-1. Seller Inventory # WRCAM55523

Used Hardcover First Edition

Seller rating 5 out of 5 stars 5-star rating, Learn more about seller ratings

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. BOOK DESCRIPTION: 8vo, 347 pgs, frontis and other portraits and plates. Original gray cloth with gilt cover and spine; top edge gilt. This copy used by Morningside Bookshop's 1976 facsimile reprint using an original edition and pasting in a printed sheet of their introduction and publishing information; following, the book was recased back into its original binding with new endpapers. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Covers have minor soiling, spine is a bit darkened; gilt is bright. Interior is clean and tight; with the pasted Morningside material inserted and attached. With clear, mylar wrapper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Hood's Brigade distinguished itself in the American Civil War. Along with the Stonewall Brigade, they were considered the Confederate Army's shock troops. It fought in every major battle of the Eastern Theater except Chancellorsville. REFERENCES: KRICK 401: "This is one of the more famous Confederate unit histories, detailing the actions of one of the most famous Confederate units. The body of the volume is largely a connected compilation of primary accounts of the brigade's experiences by its members -- some of the material being contemporary and some produced from memory after the war. A few biographical sketches of members of the brigade are appended, together with a list of the men surrendered at Appomattox. Of special value is a fairly accurate and moderately comprehensive roster of the soldiers in each company of the 1st, 4th, and 5th Texas Infantry. Equippage enthusiasts will be delighted with a sketch of a uniformed and accoutered member of the brigade, date 1861." HOWES P-465; JENKINS, Basic Texas Books 165: "This is an account of the military actions of one of the most battle-scarred regiments of the Civil War. Polley writes from the philosophy that the majority of readers [are] more interested in what is done than in the how and the wherefore of it and states flatly: 'The righteousness of the cause for which it fought and suffered is taken from granted and confessed by every fair-minded and native-born American.' The volume consists of a chronological narrative of the brigade's service between 1861 and 1865, interspersed with numerous official reports and with fascinating eye-witness accounts by private soldiers. The anecdotal reminiscences are especially interesting and give flavor to an otherwise straightforward narrative, although Polley contributes some episodes of his own." NEVINS I pg 147: :"A composite of personal reminiscences of service in one of the most famous Confederate units; more reliable than the next title (A Soldier's Letters to Charming Nellie, Neale, 1908)" RAMSDELL, Quarterly, Texas Historical Association, Vol. 15: "Mr. Polley has executed his commission most admirably; the volume is well conceived and well written. The greater part of the story is compiled from the memories and diaries of the author and his surviving comrades, but it is substantiated by the official records as far as have been preserved. Naturally enough, the narrative reflects the experiences of the private in the ranks more than the officer, and is not the less interesting for doing that; but still it presents a fairly adequate view of the general problems of the several campaigns and thus gives to the work of the brigade its proper setting" COULTER 375. Large 8vo.; in the publisher's gray buckram, with titling in gilt, and with a rule in black to the perimeter of the upper board and the ends of the spine; 347 pages, with two frontispieces, and 23 additonal plates and portraits; the boards are lightly spotted, and the title page has a rubber stamp "Sold by the New York Herald" over a previous owner blindstamp; on the pastedown is the name label of a well-known Richmond collector Hubel Robin with a penned number, presumably from his library.~~Eicher observes that this account "contains valuable muster rolls for the 1st, 4th and 10th Texas Infantry and intriguing biographical sketches of many of the members [as well as] a list of Appomatox paroles." Krick tells us that "[t]his is one of the most famous Confederate unit histories"; he notes that company rosters are most valuable, and (true to form) adds that "equipage enthusiasts will be delighted with a sketch of a unifromed and accoutered member of the brigade, dated 1861".~~A presentable copy of this important Neale title.~~ (Eicher , 1047; Krick 401).
