Light blue endpapers; edge-worn front free endpaper detached and now laid-in; shallow chipping to lower fore-edge of rear free endpaper; four-line non-authorial ink gift inscription dated 1883 on front flyleaf; pages 15-16 worn along fore-edge with leaf formerly detached but now tipped-in; some scattered soiling and moisture stains. Front and rear hinges shaken with other lesser stress points to text block binding but all still holding. A good copy of a standard nineteenth century American horse reference. Total of eight b/w plates (including tissue-guarded frontispiece) on unpaged leaves although "Dexter" plate bound-in opposite page 469 (page xi's "List of Illustrations" calls for it being opposite page 495); other b/w illustrations inset amongst text. Porter & Coates imprint at foot of title page but verso notes partnership's 1871 copyright followed by stand-alone successor Henry T. Coates' 1880 copyright. Concluding chapter "The American Trotting Horse" (pages 469-505) by contributor Ellwood Harvey and dated January 1880.
