Vi + 417 pages Bound in contemporary half-calf with marbled boards, 5 raised bands and gilt decorated spine, crimson & olive morocco labels. Some mild foxing to prelims at front and rear, very slight rubbing wear at extremes, lovely 19th century library binding, pencil signature of "H. W. Carlyle" on FFEP. Very good+. First printed in 1854. *Dr Doran was an English writer of Irish parents, onetime editor of The Athenaeum, wrote a series of light hearted works on historical and current manners and social habits, all with "punning" titles. This volume has chapters on Beards and their Wearers + Swords + Glove, Buckles and Buttons, Stockings, Tailors (about 11 chapters on all sort of people termed "Tailor" both humorous and real), Puppets, The 3 Beau's Brummell, Nash, Fielding + other asides. We always take items back unreservedly if not in the condition as described. We always try to describe fully.
