A particularly beautiful hand-colored Valentine with the original postmarked envelope addressed to Miss Lydia M. Wales of Upton, Massachusetts. The image depicts a beautiful young lady reading a letter in a rose garden, surrounded by verse that begins, "One look of love from those bright eyes / To cheer this anxious breast- / One smile from thee I'd fondly prize, / And be for ever blest." Bifolium (9.75" by 7.75") with hand colored lithograph to first leaf recto, gold lithographed border. With original postmarked chromolithographed envelope measuring 5.25" by 8.5" with red wax seal still partially intact. Note the similar decorative devices on the valentine and cover. Lydia M. Wales was wed to Charles F. Blood in Milford, Worcester, Massachusetts on April 17, 1842. Very good. Minor toning, letter creases. One or two small tears, one open in left-hand margin (approx. 1 cm square loss). Hand coloring remains bright. Minor soiling, wear, toning to envelope.
