About this Item
With: Two autograph letters, signed, by Alice Barron (1857-1940), daughter of Oregon pioneer Hugh Franklin Barron, owner and operator of "Barron's Stage Stop" or "Barron's Station", also known as "Mountain House". The first letter: dated Ashland, Oct. 20th, 1875, to "Mr. G. Butler, declining his invitation to an event because she had already accepted someone else's offer, signed "As ever your friend, Alice Barron". The second letter: dated Barron, Oregon, March 9th 1886, "Dear Hubbie", joking that se may file for divorce based on "abandonment" because he is so seldom home. Her "Hubbie" is Gwin Samuel Butler, the "G. Butler" of letter one. Both letters in Fine condition. The Mountain House, built in 1852, with a second story that was added in 1887. It is one of the first frame dwellings built in Oregon south of the Willamette Valley and is the oldest known dwelling in southern Oregon, located on the current Old Hwy 99 about 9 miles south of Ashland, about 50 yards south of Barron Creek. An important traveler's landmark and way station during the area's pioneer settlement era, the Mountain House is built of plank and balloon framing and remains an intact example of a very early vernacular dwelling. The 1852 Mountain House, although currently in only poor-to-fair condition, retains very high integrity to its original design. In1904, when Major Hugh Barron died, the land was transferred to his children. The Butler couple were prominent philanthropists in the Ashland region. For example, there is a sign in front of the Lithia Park Amphitheater: "Erected in memory of Gwin Samuel Butler and Alice Barron Butler to perpetuate to this Community the Service they freely gave during their lifetime.".
