Forty years ago there were few process research and development activities in the pharmaceutical industry, partly due to the simplicity of drug molecules. With increasing structural complexity especially the introduction of chiral centers into drug molecules and stricter regulations, process R&D has become one of the critical departments for pharmaceutical companies.

Dr Wenyi Zhao, Senior Research Scientist (Process Chemistry), Member of American Chemical Society. 1980-1990: Ph.D., Organic/Physical Organic Chemistry, Nanjing University, China. 1990-1992: Postdoctoral fellow in Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing. 1992-1995: Associate professor in Institute of Photographic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing (Now becomes Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing). 1995-2001: Sr. research associate in Department of Chemistry, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas 2001 - 2005. Dr Wenyi Zhao then moved into the private sector to become a process chemist in the pharmaceutical industry in the US with over 15 years of experience. He is the author of numerous journal articles and holds several patents.
