The book entitled “Handbook of Disaster Management” is in two volumes contains wide array of topics, divided into fourteen chapters undertakes a thorough, pragmatic approach. Chapter One deals with an introduction to disasters, hazards and vulnerabilities. Chapter Two is an overview of select disasters in and around India is provided in a chronological order, ranging from Indian famine of 1899–1900 to operation Surya hope in 2013. Chapter Third focus lies on an overview of dimensions, implications and impacts of disasters. Chapter Fourth is an overview of disaster management and hazard risk management. Chapter Five is about the major aspects of disaster management process. Chapter Six emphases are on the significance of training and control planning for disaster mitigation. Chapter seven discussed the role of local institutions and research in disaster management. Chapter Eight is an overview of disaster management in India. Chapter Nine discuss and highlights the major institutions related to disaster management in India such as, National Civil Defense College, National Disaster Response Force and National Institute of Disaster Management. Efforts are made towards understanding the disaster management act in India in Chapter Ten. Chapter Eleven discuss the disaster management at state level in India with select case studies and select disaster management plans. Chapter Twelve is an overview of international disaster emergency service. The global disaster reduction initiatives and strategies are discussed in Chapter Thirteen. In Chapter Fourteen other disaster management related global declarations and resolutions are highlighted.
