The Handbook of Emotions for the Helping Professions

The second edition of The Handbook of Emotions for the Helping Professions-previously titled The Handbook of Counseling and Emotions-has been significantly reorganized to create a focus on the role of emotions within the helping professions.

The second edition is organized into two distinct parts. Part I, titled "Your Emotional World," explores different theoretical perspectives for understanding emotions. Part II is titled "Emotion Regulation." Emotion regulation (ER) is described in terms of what it is and why it matters, as well as how ER varies across culture, age, and gender. An in-depth overview of how emotion regulation strategies can be used to understand and treat mental disorders such as bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, personality disorders, and schizophrenia is also provided.

The Handbook of Emotions for the Helping Professions is ideal for courses and programs across the helping professions. It is also an ideal resource for current practitioners.

Michael Nystul received his Ph.D. in counseling from Oregon State University. He holds the position of professor emeritus in the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology at New Mexico State University. Professor Nystul has had over 44 years of clinical experience in the USA, Australia, and the Navajo Indian reservation as a licensed clinical mental health counselor, school counselor, and psychologist in a variety of settings such as K-12 schools, university counseling centers, community mental health centers, hospitals, and private practice. He has authored or co-authored over 100 publications within the field of counseling and other helping professions, including journal articles, book chapters, and books.
