The twenty chapters in this book show both sides of the interaction between logic and language: how logical systems are designed and modified in response to linguistic needs, and how mathematical theory arises out of this process and affects subsequent linguistic theory.

K. van Benthem is Director of the Institute for Logic, Language, and Computation, and Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, at the University of Amsterdam. He is also Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Standford University. Alice G. B. ter Meulen is Professor of Philosophy and Linguistics and Core Faculty in Cognitive Science at Indiana University.
