Handbook of Multicultural Counseling

Note: The following two quotes are from the same journal "The Handbook of Multicultural Counseling makes a major contribution to the mental health field and particularly to advancing the development of the concept, knowledge, and practice of addressing cultural diversity in mental health. The handbook is simultaneously a comprehensive compendium of the field′s latest knowledge and a prologue to emerging developments in multicultural counseling." --Cultural Diversity and Mental Health The Handbook of Multicultural Counseling is a compilation of the best in multicultural counseling scholarship. The newcomer to the field and the seasoned multiculturalist alike will find this collection valuable. It delivers all that the editors promise and it positions the field for even greater growth. And more than just that, the authors and editors have also demonstrated principled selflessness and commitment to the field by assigning all royalties to a fund to be administered to provide scholarships for ethnic minority students preparing for careers in the counseling discipline." --Cultural Diversity and Mental Health "Current research and developments in the field of multicultural counseling are assembled in this comprehensive handbook, in which leading theorists and researchers update, revisit, and extend their work, and newer scholars and practitioners present recent trends and materials. The result is a sourcebook offering critical reviews, historical perspectives, and leading-edge ideas to promote and guide culturally sensitive and competent practices, organizations, supervision, training, and research. . . . In the burgeoning literature of the multicultural arena, this is an issue-oriented, problem-focused compendium that is well worth reading." --Gayla Rogers in READINGS: A Journal of Reviews and Commentary in Mental Health "The editors of this book have compiled the single most comprehensive volume on multicultural counseling to date. . . . The Handbook of Multicultural Counseling truly conveys a sense of comprehensiveness and completeness. The content the book covers is crucial for everybody in the counseling profession. . . . Not only does the handbook establish the standard for multicultural counseling course textbooks, it is also an excellent volume to add to any counselor′s professional library. Finally, it is particularly impressive that, as a demonstration of their commitment to the issues brought forward in this book, the editors and authors have donated all royalties to provide minority student scholarships." --Mark E. Johnson in Counseling Today "The editors and contributors should be applauded for creating what is sure to become a cornerstone in the field of multicultural counseling and training. Typically, multicultural counseling books address issues relevant to a single culture or ethnic group. In contrast, this book presents issues germane to multicultural counseling as they apply to different cultures and ethnic groups. Another asset of this book is that it examines multiculturalism in contexts (e.g., supervision, training, teaching, organizations, and family or individual therapy) that are relevant to practitioners, academics, researchers, and graduate students. Rating: *****" --Doody′s Health Sciences Book Review Journal "The Handbook of Multicultural Counseling is an unprecedented review of the most recent thoughts about and research into the area of counseling for individuals of multicultural backgrounds. . . . The editors are to be complimented for their thorough efforts at presenting an abundance of information in a format that is both clear and concise. . . . This volume identifies those areas in which the profession has been strong in rhetoric but weak in action and prescribes the steps necessary to achieve a new level of professional practice with individuals of multicultural backgrounds. Given the changing demographics in this country, it is essential reading for all counselors." --NARPPS Journal "Joseph G. Ponterotto has assembled an impressive array of leading authorities and emerging scholars to produce the most comprehensive sourcebook available today for the teaching and practice of multicultural counseling. . . .With great potential as a catalyst for more substantive integration of multicultural perspectives, this book′s utility is heightened by thoughtful historical overviews, inclusion of training modules and case studies in the chapters, and appendixes with competencies and standards, ethical principles, and guidelines for providers." --Choice "This is a handbook that leaves few stones unturned. I can thoroughly recommend it as a course reader or as one of the most comprehensive texts in this area of work. Although the emphasis is on the American scene, it will still be of interest to many British psychologists." --Stephen Palmer in British Psychological Society Counselling Psychology Review A highly collaborative effort, the Handbook of Multicultural Counseling draws together the latest developments in the rapidly evolving field of multicultural counseling. Leading and emerging scholars present recent advances in theory, research, practice, and training to form a rich compendium of information for students and professionals in counseling and related disciplines. As the most comprehensive text in the field, this handbook discusses the historical foundation of the multicultural movement in psychology, provides an ethical statement on the status of the profession, and examines the latest developments in racial/ethnic identity and acculturation theory. This significant resource also offers timely multicultural perspectives on career counseling, group counseling, family counseling, organizational development, and intelligence and personality assessment. Furthermore, the volume provides integrative reviews of the most recent empirical research. The broad perspective and thorough approach of the Handbook of Multicultural Counseling make it a unique source for counselors and other mental health professionals who seek to improve their competence in treating a culturally diverse clientele. "Never before in the history of the multicultural counseling movement have so many of our best theorists, researchers, and practitioners lent their individual and collective expertise to a single project. . . . Clearly, the fields of counseling (and dare I say clinical) psychology in general and multicultural counseling in particular, have been demanding a sourcebook that could speak to the complexity of the multicultural movement in a single volume. The Handbook of Multicultural Counseling may have come very close to filling that bill. . . . And, by the way, a word of caution: Use of this handbook may render your excuses for not being culturally competent null and void. Users are advised to be serious in their commitment to be transformed. After reading this, you will be expected to be accountable." --from the Foreword by Thomas A. Parham
