Synopsis
Mental health clients and patients frequently note that their psychological functioning is closely connected to their spirituality and religion. This is true in the sense that they can either experience greater peace of mind, sense of inner freedom, and positive emotions as well as crises and disruption from spiritual experiences, religious communities, and practices or rituals they have adopted. Unfortunately, it is well known that mental health professionals do not receive adequate training to address these common issues. This book helps address this gap in training by providing mental health educators and supervisors practical and approachable training strategies to develop spiritual and religious competencies to work with clients from across the wide spectrum of spirituality and religion diversity.
About the Author
Joseph Currier is a licensed psychologist and Professor of Psychology at University of South Alabama (USA). His research focuses on addressing spirituality/religion in trauma, moral injury, and other mental health challenges in education/training and clinical practice. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles and two books, entitled Trauma, Meaning, and Spirituality: Translating Research into Clinical Practice and Addressing Moral Injury in Clinical Practice. He served as PI for the Spiritual and Religious Competencies Project and Director of Clinical Training for the Clinical and Counseling Psychology Doctoral Program at USA. He is the incoming editor for Spirituality in Clinical Practice.
Jesse Fox is Associate Professor of Counselor Education at Stetson University and Executive Director of Episcopal Counseling Center of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. He has published many peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on the role of spirituality/religion in mental health, psychotherapy, clinical training, and assessment along with two books, entitled Bringing Religion and Spirituality into Therapy and Spirituality and Avoiding Difficult Emotions: Working with Spiritual Bypass. He served as Co-PI on the Spiritual and Religious Competencies Project and chaired the Religious and Spiritual Competencies Task Force as President of the Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling (ASERVIC).
Cassandra Vieten is Clinical Professor and Director of the Center for Mindfulness at the Centers for Integrative Health in the Department of Family Medicine at UC San Diego. She is also Director of Research at the Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination and Clinical Psychology Director at the Psychedelics and Health Research Initiative at UCSD. She served as a Co-PI on the Spiritual and Religious Competencies Project and co-authored many peer-reviewed articles on addressing spirituality and religion in mental health care and the book, Spiritual and Religious Competencies in Clinical Practice: Guidelines for Psychologists and Mental Health Professionals.
