Das Handbuch Sprache in der Geschichte stellt den bereits vorhandenen Darstellungen der Genese der lexikalischen, grammatischen und textlichen Teilsysteme des Deutschen keinen neuen �berblick an die Seite, sondern beleuchtet vielmehr die Rolle, die dem Sprechen und Schreiben in der Sprache Deutsch im Laufe der Sprachgeschichte zugeschrieben wurde. In dieser Perspektive wird die Geschichtlichkeit von Sprache mit all ihren Facetten aus dem �berlieferten Sprachbewusstsein bzw. aus dem Gebrauchsspektrum der Sprache erschlossen.
Das Handbuch besteht aus zwei konstituierenden Bl�cken. Auf den ersten, allgemeinen, an den Gegenstandsbereichen der Sprachgeschichte orientierten Teil schlie�t sich ein zweiter, auf die verschiedenen Wissensdom�nen (allt�gliche Sinnwelt, institutionelle Sinnwelt, religi�se Sinnwelt, wissenschaftliche Sinnwelt und dichterische Sinnwelt) bezogener Teil an. Die Beitr�ge er�ffnen in ihrer Gesamtheit eine neue Sicht auf die Geschichte der deutschen Sprache.
