Add to basketDieter Roth?s postcards, which he would paint on and occasionally cover with collages, play an important role in his artistic repertoire. Postcards would be manipulated, distorted, contorted, even totally obliterated. This is a fine early example of Roth?s postcard art, produced in 1965 when he taught the graphic arts class at Rhode Island School of Design. The postcard is of a view of Providence?s financial district and the city?s tallest building, the Industrial National Bank. Roth has obliterated the view of the city and its architecture, and covered the entire lower portion of the front of the postcard with white paint. Only the view of the sky remains untouched. On top of the white paint Roth has painted in orange wash the exclamation ?he ! fabri !? On the verso Roth has addressed and mailed the card to the Cologne-based author Albrecht Fabri (franked Oct 7, 1965), who was to go on and collaborate with Roth on his ?Scheisse? book of poems, published the following year in Providence. Mailed postcard, with small area of creasing to lower right corner.
