Hanon for the Developing Pianist : Hal Leonard Student Piano Library

Hanon for the Developing Pianist by Charles-Louis Hanon is a carefully adapted piano technique study book for today’s developing and intermediate piano students. Part of the Hal Leonard Student Piano Library Technique Classics series, this edition presents Hanon’s influential exercises in a format that supports modern learning while preserving the musical discipline that has guided pianists for generations. It is especially well suited for developing pianists, piano students working with teachers, and intermediate players seeking stronger finger control, coordination, and technical confidence.

Drawing on the original edition, this version of Hanon’s well-known piano exercises adds features that help students engage more deeply with technical practice. Practical worksheets highlight key technical ideas through practice tips, quick quizzes, and creative prompts, while virtuoso-style variation suggestions and chromatic scale exercises help reinforce agility, evenness, and finger independence across the keyboard. Designed for learning, daily practice, and guided study, it serves as a focused technique resource rather than performance repertoire.

Beyond technique, the edition enriches learning with short historical and biographical insights about Hanon and the tradition of piano study. This context helps students connect daily practice with the broader history of classical piano pedagogy. Teachers will appreciate how the structured exercises support lesson planning, while students benefit from clear goals that gradually build strength, precision, and musical awareness.

Hanon’s studies remain among the most widely used technical exercises for pianists because they address foundational skills required for nearly every style of piano playing. Regular practice encourages consistency, improves hand coordination, and develops the finger dexterity needed for more advanced repertoire.
