Clément Lambelet interessierte sich für den Prozess der automatischen Gesichtserkennung und reflektierte über dessen Verallgemeinerung angesichts seiner Entwicklung in sozialen Medien wie Facebook, Instagram und Snapchat. Für das Buch "Happiness is the only true emotion" arbeitete er mit einer Auswahl von Porträts, die vom Pain Express Set der Universität Stirling in Schottland bereitgestellt wurden. Er wählte eine Emotion pro Person aus, schnitt die Bilder neu zu und speicherte nur das Gesicht. Der Künstler manipulierte jedes Foto und arbeitete an dessen Materialität, um ausdrucksstärkere Bilder zu erhalten. Diese Porträts wurden zu einem Vektor der Emotion. Jedes Bild wurde dann der Microsoft Cognitive Emotion API vorgelegt, um die Genauigkeit dieser Systeme herauszufordern. Die Emotion API erkannte nur mit Sicherheit das Glück.

Synopsis

The Pain Expressions Set, established by the University of Stirling, is an emotion database containing 599 portraits of thirteen women and ten men, probably actors. Each person expresses six basic human emotions (anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, surprise), plus ten expressions of pain. Systems or devices that can automatically recognise and interpret human emotions are the subject of this work, for which visual artist Clément Lambelet chose one emotion per person and cropped the pictures to retain only the face. Each image was then submitted to the Microsoft Emotion API to test its accuracy. Happiness was the only emotion it could recognise with certainty.
