Inevitably, this work will be compared with The Times Atlas of World History ( LJ 1/85) and not necessarily to its detriment, but rather with the recognition that the Harper Atlas is intended for a different audience, specifically, smaller libraries. The Times Atlas has few illustrations, being mainly maps and text, and employs a more formal writing style, while the Harper Atlas (first published in France as Le grand livre de l'histoire du monde ) has a more flowery text, with many reproductions of paintings and photographs. It is also easier to handle (being 11 inches high to the Times 's 14 inches), and its text is more readable though the print is not, being smaller than Times' s.
