[From Preface] In compiling these recipes from our home experiences, we have given only the good and tried, being those that have proved satisfactory to us and are our best ones. We unhesitatingly commend them. The amount realized from the sale of these books is for the benefit of the Christian church. We have studied to be helpful to all who need our assistance; for as a bee gathers a little sweetness from all the flowers, so we have gathered a few good things from our several homes to bless such housekeepers as possess one of our Harrison County Cook Books. The advertisers are our tried and trusted business man. "O woman! enthroned by your visions elate, in temples of learning, and chambers of state, Politician, or lawyer, or doctor so wise - Go bottle your tears and pickle your sighs; For descend you must to every day life, And enter the ranks of the housekeepers' strife. You may settle, like Darwin, the monkey's sad fate; But no art of persuasion, winy or wise, Will settle the coffee or make the bread rise; Like the ghost of poor Banquo, you always must meet That unsettled old question, 'O what shall we eat?' and another close follows, 'O what shall we cook?' That question is answered in this little book.".
