Not a work aimed at scholars, although scholars will certainly use it, this book is a guide for the layperson to the most exquisite works in the Sackler, Fogg, and Busch-Reisinger Museums. Four hundred objects representing the vast and varied collections of the museums are illustrated and each is accompanied by a physical description, bibliographical references, and, generally, a brief narrative describing various aspects of the piece. Though one might wish for more color reproductions, both the color and black-and-white illustrations are of high caliber. Browsing through these pagessubtle Chinese ink paintings, sumptuous Islamic objects, reverent medieval paintings, elegant Ingres, intoxicating Whistler and Renoirmakes one want to rush right up to Cambridge.
