Includes Dedication; Introduction and Acknowledgments. Illustrated with drawings and illustrated front and rear endpapers. "Much of the material for this anthology has been gleaned from a scrapbook containing bits of verse, maxims, and quotations which I have been collecting since early boyhood. These bits of treasure have been of inestimable worth to me through the years as a source of pleasure and inspiration as well as providing a greater appreciation of literature and beauty in all its forms. I have carried this scrapbook with me to distant lands, and in lonely hours found in it pleasure and as "light unto my feet." From the days when I was a country boy with a weekly newspaper and an occasional magazine as my sole source of reading material to supplement the wonderful classics in the old McGuffey Readers, and through my years as a teacher, school administrator, and athletic coach on the high school, college, and university levels, my interests have undergone much change. This change is reflected in the materials in this anthology. Therefore the contents should be sufficiently varied as to provide something of interest and value to all. Besides selections from the masters, there are a number of poems which have not before appeared in an anthology, and some which have not before been published. With full knowledge that I am not richly endowed with poetic genius, I have included a few of my own compositions. There need be no agitation on Parnassus. It is hoped that in this anthology the reader will find pleasure, inspiration, and a greater meaning to life." - from the Introduction by the author, Ernest R. Miller.
