The Hawk

This unusual book consists of a long, narrative poem followed by a selection of new short poems. The title poem is exceptional in its form and in its wide scope and range, weaving together images of a life, dream-like narrative scenes, into a lyrical story. Its protagonist is a complex man of the northwest woods, whose life is played out for him in a fantastical adventure. The Hawk sets the tone for the set of short poems of a more conventional and reflective form that follow. This small volume is an adventure in the art of poetry through pictures of struggle and memory, an affection for the land, and a search for meaning and the future.

David Galas is a scientist and artist working in the Northwest. His scientific work in biology and medicine has been his main occupation for many years. He now lives with his wife on an island in Puget Sound. His first book of poetry, a collection from many years of writing, was published in 2009.
