Haydn

From a humble village in Rohrau to the glittering courts of Europe, Joseph Haydn’s life is one of discipline, invention, wit, and astonishing musical growth. In this clear and engaging biography, J. Cuthbert Hadden follows Haydn from his difficult boyhood and hard years in Vienna to his long service under the Esterházy princes, where isolation became the workshop of genius. Here is the composer who helped shape the symphony and the string quartet, the genial craftsman whose humour, faith, patience, and tireless industry transformed eighteenth-century music. Hadden traces the triumphs of the London visits, the creation of The Creation and The Seasons, and the quiet dignity of Haydn’s final years, while also examining the man behind the masterpieces: loyal, shrewd, devout, practical, and warmly human. Rich with letters, anecdotes, historical setting, a catalogue of works, and a portrait of musical Europe in transition, Haydn is both an accessible introduction and a rewarding study for lovers of classical music. It presents not merely a famous name, but a living artist whose melodies carried good sense, sunlight, and structural brilliance into the modern musical world, leaving a legacy that still sounds fresh, balanced, and deeply humane today for listeners and readers alike.
