Synopsis

Construction of the National Road was authorized by legislation signed by President Thomas Jefferson in 1806. Construction of the Road began in Cumberland, Maryland and reached Wheeling in 1818. Groundbreaking for the Ohio portion of the National Road took place in St. Clairsville, Belmont County on July 4, 1825. By 1830 the Road had been completed westward through Muskingum County. Farmers and other individuals along the route often boarded bosses and foremen of the labor gangs, and after the Road was finished, these early "taverns" provided overnight lodging and meals for emigrants, stagecoach passengers, teamsters, and drovers. Two such establishments, Cliff Rock House (also known as Smith House), built in 1830, and neighboring Headley Inn, built in 1833 and enlarged in 1835, are still standing along the National Road in western Muskingum County. This book focuses on the history of these two early taverns, their first owners - Uzal Headley and Edward Smith - and their subsequent occupants. In 1857 Edward Smith's son purchased Headley Inn and used it as a barn for the next six decades. In 1922 two of Edward's great-granddaughters, Amelia and Gladys Smith, renovated the old building and opened Headley Inn Restaurant and Tea Room, which remained in business for the next forty years. During this time the sisters received national acclaim for their fine food and hospitality. Cliff Rock House remains a private residence, and Headley Inn continues to serve the public as a popular Bed and Breakfast.
