John Sergent is a well respected Nashville physician. For over fifteen years he has been a regular op-ed columnist for the Nashville Tennessean. He was President of the American College of Rheumatology and has been selected as a Master in both the American College of Rheumatology and the American College of Physicians. He is a co-editor of the leading textbook in rheumatology. For over fifteen years he has been a regular op-ed columnist for the Nashville Tennessean, from which these essays were collected.

About the Author
John Sergent was born in West Virginia and grew up in Kentucky. He graduated from Vanderbilt University with a BA degree in 1963 and from Vanderbilt University Medical School in l966. He completed his graduate training in internal medicine and rheumatology at Johns Hopkins, the National Institutes of Health, Vanderbilt, and Cornell. In addition to nine years in private practice, he has spent the remainder of his career on the Vanderbilt faculty. He was the university s first chief of rheumatology, then later served as Chief of Medicine at St. Thomas Hospital and subsequently was the first Chief Medical Officer of the Vanderbilt Medical Group. He currently serves as vice chair for education of the Department of Medicine and is the director of the internal medicine residency program. His greatest love is teaching, for which he has received numerous awards from his peers as well as his students. In 2007 Vanderbilt established an annual teaching award in his name. Dr. Sergent is married and has two daughters. His greatest current pleasure is spoiling his four grandchildren.
