A diagnosis of heart failure can feel frightening, but understanding what is happening inside your body can help you make informed decisions and take a more active role in your care.
Heart Failure: Everything You Need to Know About Heart Failure, from Diagnosis and Treatment to Daily Care, Recovery, and Long-Term Heart Health by Dr. Sofia E Engel is a comprehensive, patient-focused guide designed to help readers understand heart failure, navigate treatment options, manage daily challenges, and build sustainable habits that support better heart health.
Heart failure does not mean that the heart has stopped working. It means the heart is no longer pumping blood as efficiently as the body requires, and while it is a serious chronic condition, many people live meaningful and active lives when it is properly understood and managed.
This book provides a clear roadmap from diagnosis to long-term management, helping patients, caregivers, and families better understand the condition and the steps involved in living well with heart failure.
Inside, you will discover:
• How the heart works and what changes when heart failure develops
• The different types and classifications of heart failure, including reduced, preserved, and mildly reduced ejection fraction
• Common symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling, weight changes, cough, and reduced exercise tolerance
• The major causes of heart failure, including coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, valve disease, cardiomyopathy, diabetes, obesity, and other contributing conditions
• How doctors diagnose heart failure using medical history, physical examination, blood tests, echocardiograms, imaging, and specialized testing
• How ejection fraction, heart failure stages, and functional classifications influence treatment decisions
• Modern medical treatments and medications used to improve symptoms and outcomes
• The role of devices, procedures, cardiac rehabilitation, and advanced therapies
• How to manage sodium, fluids, weight, symptoms, and daily monitoring
• Heart-healthy nutrition strategies and practical dietary guidance
• Safe exercise approaches and the importance of physical activity in maintaining function
• How to recognize worsening symptoms and when to seek urgent medical attention
• Ways to manage stress, emotional challenges, relationships, and the psychological impact of chronic illness
• How technology and remote monitoring are changing heart failure care
• How to prepare for healthcare visits and communicate effectively with your medical team
• How to create a personalized heart failure action plan for long-term success
The book covers the complete journey of living with heart failure, beginning with understanding normal heart function and progressing through diagnosis, treatment, medications, lifestyle changes, symptom monitoring, emotional wellbeing, healthcare navigation, and long-term planning.
Heart failure care has advanced significantly, with improved medications, monitoring technology, and rehabilitation programs helping many people achieve better outcomes and quality of life.
Whether you are newly diagnosed, have been managing heart failure for years, care for someone with the condition, or simply want to understand cardiovascular health better, this guide provides practical information to help you ask better questions, understand your options, and work more effectively with your healthcare team.
Understand your heart. Recognize the warning signs. Make informed treatment decisions. Build healthier daily habits. And take control of your long-term heart health journey.

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book.
