With this in mind, Dr. Barry A. Franklin set out to create a go-to manual for heart health geared towards the patient. The result was The Heart-Healthy Handbook--a one stop heart shop. Dr. Franklin worked with top cardiologists across the county to write easy to read information that addresses everything heart health related. About the Author
Dr. Barry Franklin serves as the Director of Preventive Cardiology and Cardiac Rehabilitation at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. He also holds faculty appointments as Professor of Physiology, Wayne State University School of Medicine, and Professor of Internal Medicine and Biomedical Engineering, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.
Dr. Franklin is a past editor-in-chief of both the Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention and The American Journal of Medicine and Sports, as well as a past president of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR, 1988) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM, 1999). In addition, he has held multiple leadership positions with the American Heart Association (AHA), at the local, regional, and national level, including appointments to the national AHA Board of Trustees, as well as a member of the Administrative Cabinet. He is also a past chair of the AHA s Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Metabolism, as well as its Advocacy Committee. In 1995, he served as a member of the expert Cardiac Rehabilitation Guideline Panel, convened by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Dr. Franklin s professional accomplishments have been recognized through a number of honors and awards, including the Award of Excellence (AACVPR); the Pollock Established Investigator Award (AACVPR); the Award of Meritorious Achievement (AHA); the Outstanding Medical Research Award (William Beaumont Hospital); and both the Citation and Honor Awards (ACSM).
Currently, Dr. Franklin serves on the editorial boards of 15 scientific and clinical journals, including the American Journal of Cardiology; Sports Medicine, Physician and Sportsmedicine; American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine; Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention; American Journal of Health Promotion; and BottomLine Health. He has written or edited nearly 600 publications, including 481 papers, 85 book chapters, and 26 books. In addition, he has given over 1,000 invited presentations to state, national and international, medical, and lay audiences. In 2015, he was listed by Thomson Reuters among the World s Most Influential Scientific Minds (Clinical Medicine).
Dr. Simon R. Dixon received his medical training at the University of Auckland School of Medicine in Auckland, New Zealand. After completing fellowships in cardiology and interventional cardiology at Greenlane Hospital in Auckland, he moved to Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak in 1999 to further his interventional training. He has been on the academic faculty at Beaumont since 2001 and currently serves as the chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine. He is also a Professor of Medicine at Oakland University School of Medicine.
Dr. Dixon specializes in the treatment of complex coronary artery disease and is nationally regarded for his research contributions in acute myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, percutaneous circulatory support devices, and coronary atherosclerosis. In 2015, he was awarded the inaugural Dorothy Susan Timmis Endowed Chair of Cardiology.
