About the Author

Jilanne Hoffmann's debut picture book, The River of Dust: The Life-Giving Link Between North Africa and the Amazon, received a starred review from Publishers Weekly, was a Junior Library Guild Gold selection and named a Bank Street Best and ALA Notable children's book, and received both the Louis J. Battan Author's Award for K-12 books and a Crystal Kite. Her second picture book, The Ocean's Heart, was called "a shimmering tale of interdependence and survival" in a starred review from Kirkus. Jilanne has a degree in engineering, an MFA in writing, and co-directed San Francisco's Kidquake for eight years. She was a freelance science writer and editor covering health, fitness, and other topics for adults for twenty years, before deciding to write for the toughest audience of all— kids. Jilanne lives in San Francisco with her family and hyperactive herding dog.
