The world is changing. So are the threats. Are you prepared?
Whether you're deploying to a humanitarian crisis, reporting from a conflict zone, traveling off the beaten path, or simply wanting to become more prepared for emergencies, The HEAT Book 2.0 delivers the practical knowledge you need to recognize danger, make better decisions under pressure, and increase your chances of coming home safely.
Based on the principles of Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) used worldwide by humanitarian organizations, journalists, security professionals, and expedition teams, this updated second edition transforms professional safety training into a compact, easy-to-read guide you can take anywhere.
As global instability grows, the risks are evolving. Armed conflict, civil unrest, terrorism, natural disasters, climate-related emergencies, artificial intelligence, and rapidly changing geopolitical realities are reshaping the environments in which people work and travel. The HEAT Book 2.0 helps you prepare for both familiar dangers and emerging threats with practical, field-tested guidance.
Inside you'll discover:
• 16 interactive, scenario-based exercises, including 2 brand-new missions
• 8 new chapters covering today's most relevant personal safety challenges
• Practical guidance drawn from real-world incidents and established best practices
• Step-by-step advice for recognizing, avoiding, and responding to dangerous situations
• Essential skills for travel security, emergency preparedness, and personal risk management
What would you do if...
• You're caught in an ambush?
• A peaceful demonstration suddenly turns violent?
• You're confronted at an illegal checkpoint?
• You're the victim of a robbery?
• An active shooter attacks nearby?
• You stumble into a minefield?
• You're first on the scene of a serious road traffic accident?
• Someone needs a tourniquet—or a PEP kit?
• You must quickly assess risk and decide whether to stay, leave, or take cover?,
The HEAT Book 2.0 answers these questions with clear explanations, practical techniques, and proven survival strategies developed through years of hostile-environment training.
More than a reference guide, this is an interactive learning experience.
Join Ashley and her colleagues on their first humanitarian deployment to Zembala, a fictional Central African nation in crisis. As you progress through realistic scenarios, your decisions shape the outcome. Learn by doing as you navigate insecurity, ethical dilemmas, and rapidly changing situations while absorbing practical safety lessons, travel advice, and life-saving techniques.
Whether you're an aid worker, journalist, NGO professional, contractor, adventurer, student, traveler, or simply someone who believes preparation saves lives, The HEAT Book 2.0 is an invaluable addition to your personal safety library.
When everything goes wrong, your preparation becomes your greatest asset.
Your mission is simple: survive.
Can you take the HEAT?

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book.
