Circa late nineteenth century. Red cloth. Pages are browned, text block is intact, though book is slightly cocked to the right. Text on spine in black, title (impressed) on front board. Also on front board are two, impressed decorative bands, with the underlined title below the top one. Two perforations in red spine towards the tail. Left, top edge of spine has a 1/8" X 4 1/4" mark where the red has been lost and which shows brown. Publisher's address: 106, 108, 110 Tabernacle Street, E.C. Although the book is titled after what is perhaps Harte's most noted poem at the time, the poem, itself is found under the title, ' Plain Language from Truthful James' (pp. 33-35).
