About this Item
Folio. Pp. (41). Introduction by Ina Coolbrith. Bibliography by Robert Cowan. Frontis. illustration of a smiling Chinese man, wearing a hat and an exaggerated pigtail. Illustrated with line drawings and sketches by Phil Little. Bound in traditional Asian style, with japonise double-leaves, sewn with orange cord. Dark blue boards with some slight wear to fore-edges and old creases along lower fore-edge of front cover. Orange slipcase with printed labels on spine and front panel, has slight edge-wear, some wear to tail of spine, and a bumped corner consistent with that on the front cover of book. Written in a style that parodies Swinburne, the overall affect was Swiftian, in that Harte used Chinese stereotypes of his day to mock rampant and violent anti-Chinese sentiment then common on the West Coast. Coolbrith, who worked with Harte on the Overland Monthly, provides a fine introduction to the poem, and its wild success when first published. Alas, many readers of the day didn't understand Harte was mocking their anti-Chinese sentiment. Seller Inventory # 1689
