Add to basket"The Lord hath taken"; a grieving mother with a nun or nurse at her side, weeps near the cradle that holds the corpse of her deceased child. Etching on chine-collé on wove paper. Sheet size 412 x 613 mm., chine size 274 x 327 mm., image size 200 x 218 mm. Etched by P.J. Arendzen after the painting by C. Bisschop, c. 1870. Petrus Johannes Arendzen (Amsterdam 1846-1932 Hampton) was a Dutch reproductive artist, etcher, painter and draughtsperson, who left the Netherlands for England in 1887. Christoffel Bisschop (Leeuwarden 1828-1904 Scheveningen) was a Dutch painter, watercolorist, lithographer and draftsperson. From 1863 onwards he spent a lot of time in Paris, where he participated in numerous Salons. In very good condition, the margins faintly discoloured, with creases and some small tears (closed with acid-free archival tape; all well outside of image area). The image itself a fine and deep impression in an unmarked image area.
