Ne serait-il pas plus raisonnable, dès lors, de se demander pourquoi et comment les intellectuels français n’ont pas osé, depuis trente ans, désacraliser une pensée si fermement enracinée dans son refus de la culture démocratique ? Plus encore : Heidegger fut-il, pour nos Modernes anti-modernes, l’ultime caution disponible après l’effondrement des marxismes ? Et ses principales thèses n’ont-elles pas fourni, à l’insu de tous, la matrice dans laquelle des intellectuels en mal de référence ont voulu forger leurs slogans et leurs aversions d’époque ? Tel est donc l’objet de ce livre : refaire, à partir d’une œuvre désormais suspecte, le chemin d’une histoire de l’esprit français et de ses aveuglements. Sur ce chemin, les auteurs rencontreront, bien sûr, la plupart des débats contemporains — du refus de la modernité à la critique soixante-huitarde de nos sociétés, de la haine de la technique à l’anti-humanisme obsessionnel de certains maîtres penseurs. On aura compris que, par-delà le philosophe de Être et Temps, et par-delà ce qu’il appela lui-même sa « grosse bêtise », ce livre analyse d’abord les singulières naïvetés des intelligentsias qui n’ont jamais pu résister au plaisir de s’égarer. Luc Ferry et Alain Renaut ont déjà publié plusieurs ouvrages de philosophie politique.
