Illustrated with 13 full-page Art Nouveau / Art Deco black-and-white wood engravings by Jo Daemen. Folio. Brown cloth, with decorative gilt vignette on cover. Rotterdam, W.L. & J. Brusse, 1927. First Edition. Limited to 700 copies, set in the Erasmus of S.H. de Roos, and printed on handmade Van Gelder paper by G.J. Thieme in Nijmegen. This copy # 98. Jo Daemen was a Dutch graphic designer, illustrator, draftsman, glass artist and poet. She began her training in 1907 at the School of Applied Arts in Haarlem. She became a book cover designer for Brusse publishers in Rotterdam in 1909, and went on to illustrate sheet music and short stories for the magazine De vrouw en haar huis. Daemen also wrote lyrics for the Bussum pianist and singer Jacoba Craamer. She worked for some time in the studio of the famous glass artist Willem Bogtman. In 1919 Daemen became a member of the Nederlandsche Vereeniging voor Ambachts- en Nijverheidskunst (V.A.N.K.). The objective of the socialist-oriented association was to promote the development of craft and industrial art and to promote the interests of the practitioners of that art. Front cover slightly stained and discolored; endpapers darkened, with some offsetting; a few pages with light foxing; o/w Very Nice, with bright intricately designed woodcuts. Uncut.
