Focusing on the Crusades, this is one of a history series, modular in structure, which offers teachers the flexibility to design their own scheme of work at Key Stage 3 of the National Curriculum. Each book covers all the core study units and also a wide range of optional units, and aims to be visually stimulating as well as offering activities which develop both skills and understanding. An extensive selection of primary and secondary sources is provided. Each pupil book is accompanied by a teacher's assessment and resource pack which includes photocopiable worksheets.
Gr 4-6--Crusades provides a clear description of the battles and events that occurred during that time period. In Roman Empire, chapters on its rise and on living in the Republic will be useful for reports. Short biographical sketches are included, as are chapters on emperors and barbarians. Both books give explanations and excerpts from primary and secondary sources in sidebars. While the information will be useful to students, the crowded arrangement of the text can be distracting. Both titles include extensive indexes, full-color photographs and reproductions, and quality maps. Important terms appear in bold with clear, concise definitions. Similar in scope to entries in the "World History" series (Lucent), but more attractive.
