Hello, Mandarin Duck!

From Bao Phi (author of the Caldecott Honor–winning A Different Pond) comes a hopeful picture book for ages 4–6 about community, kindness, and helping newcomers feel welcome.

Twins Hue and Hoa are excited for the May Day parade. While waiting at the park, they spot a little duck who looks lost and confused by the noisy crowd. How can they help the duck find the pond? Soon, neighbors and friends from the community join in, each offering ideas. With teamwork, creativity, and a lot of kindness, the group works together to help the duck find its way home—just as the parade begins.

Inspired by the real May Day celebration in Minneapolis, Minnesota, this heartfelt story celebrates community, cooperation, and welcoming new neighbors. With a vibrant, multicultural neighborhood and a story rooted in real experiences, this picture book also gently explores the worries many immigrant and refugee families face—and the importance of kindness and belonging.

Includes an author’s note and photos about the real May Day parade that inspired the story.
