The Helmet of Navarre

The story is set against the backdrop of the French Wars of Religion, a series of conflicts between Catholics and Protestants in France during the late 16th century. The main character, Diane de Mauves, is a young and passionate Frenchwoman who becomes entangled in the political and religious turmoil of the time. The novel explores themes of love, honor, betrayal, and the impact of religious conflict on personal relationships. One of the notable aspects of "The Helmet of Navarre" is its portrayal of historical events and figures. The title refers to a helmet owned by the historical figure Henry of Navarre (later King Henry IV of France), who played a crucial role in the resolution of the Wars of Religion. While Bertha Runkle might not be as widely known today as some other authors of her time, "The Helmet of Navarre" was well-received in its day and contributed to the popularity of historical novels in the early 20th century. If you're interested in historical fiction with a focus on romance and adventure, this novel might be worth exploring.
