About the Author

Jerilyn Marler is the author of two books for military families: Lily Hates Goodbyes, a full-color storybook for young children who have to say goodbye to a loved one for about a billion days, and Helping Your Young Child Cope with a Parent's Deployment, a handbook for parents.

She's been a writer and editor since 1979. In the 1990s she wrote three books about WordPerfect for MIS:Press, a subsidiary of Henry Holt Publishers. Over the years she has edited dozens of technical books; edited a children's book, a medical text book, and a book on divorce at the same time and managed to stay sane; and has written/edited end user documentation for more products than she can count.

Jerilyn wrote Lily Hates Goodbyes for her (then) 4-year-old granddaughter who was distraught by her daddy's deployment aboard the USS MOMSEN. The book helped Lily talk about her feelings, develop healthy ways to cope with those feelings, feel connected to her daddy despite the distance between them, be reminded that her mommy was steadfastly beside her and that a joyful hello was coming. The book helped Lily so much that Jerilyn published it for all young children who suffer through long separations from a loved one. 

She wrote Helping Your Young Child Cope with a Parent's Deployment after repeated requests to write down her advice and guidance. She experienced long separations from her parents when she attended boarding school as a child. Her father was a Navy officer, her husband was enlisted Army, and her son is an active duty Navy officer.

Jerilyn works in Beaverton, Oregon, where she lives with Dan, her husband, and their two tabby cats.
