About the Author

Chris Conrad is author of the groundbreaking book, Hemp for Health, which discusses medical marijuana and the nutritional and environmental uses of the cannabis plant. His first book, Hemp, Lifeline to the Future, helped launch the modern hemp industry and reform movement. He is co-author with his wife, Mikki Norris, and colleague, Virginia Resner, of the new book, Shattered Lives, Portraits From America's Drug War, which explores the human cost of America's prison-based drug policy. The trio have also authored Human Rights and the US Drug War.

A quick-witted, internationally recognized expert on the history, medical, social, economic and ecological aspects of hemp, he advocates setting a legal age of consent for marijuana use by responsible adults. Mr. Conrad's research uncovers the facts, faces and cost of hemp prohibition, analyzing the political dynamics working for and against legal reform. An expert on the full spectrum of industrial, ecological, medical and social uses of cannabis, Mr. Conrad is a popular and entertaining guest on interview programs, as well as on college campuses. He has been qualified as an expert witness on cannabis in the Superior Courts of California. He was a chief proponent of two California Hemp Initiatives.

Born in 1953, Mr. Conrad is an author, businessman, consultant, lecturer and speaker, writer, editor, fine and graphic artist, designer, researcher, analyst, community organizer, historian, orator, political cartoonist and philosopher. He portrayed the character "Johnny Marijuanaseed" in PBS's The Nineties hemp show. His university degree is in fine art, and his original 1993 acrylic painting, "Hemp Fields of Tomorrow," hangs in the Hash-Marihuana-Hemp Museum. He founded the American Hemp Council in 1989. He wrote and produced the play, "Marijuana!" Mr. Conrad is a former seminarian who holds an honors degree in fine art and communications from California State University, Dominguez Hills.
