Hengler's Grand Cirque, Anlaby Road; cover printed by James Upton, Baskerville Steam Printing Works, Birmingham, 3 October 1883. Rare Victorian circus programme for Hengler's Grand Cirque, Anlaby Road, Hull. Single sheet printed on both sides, approximately 20 � 25.2 cm, with striking chromolithographic pictorial cover showing equestrian circus scenes. The verso gives the evening's programme, including music by the band, the "Trojan Youths" in a double act of horsemanship, the performing pony "Robin", Gus Elliott as clown, juggling on horseback, gymnastic exercises, trained boar-hounds, "Comical Cattle", and M. Georges performing pirouettes, evolutions and somersaults on horseback. The text also lists Hengler venues in London, Glasgow, Liverpool, Scarborough, Dublin, Bristol and Hull, and states that the Hull cirque had then been established for nineteen years. Hull Museums record a later Hengler's Grand Cirque programme from 1888, but no copy of this specific 3 October 1883 programme has been traced institutionally or commercially. Apparently unrecorded. Single sheet. Loss to upper right-hand corner, old folds, creasing, light soiling, small nicks and handling wear. Substantially complete, legible and attractive. Good condition overall.
