Henry Fielding's Don Quixote in England: Inaugural-Dissertation Zur Erlangung Der Doktorwurde Der Hohen Philosophischen Fakultat Der Universitat Bern (Classic Reprint)

Traces the global life of Don Quixote through editions, translations, and sharp English satire.

This analysis surveys how Cervantes’ classic inspired a wave of editions and imitators, and how Fielding adapted the tale for the stage and the English stage of his time. It situates the work within a broader history of translation, criticism, and cultural exchange.

Readers will gain a clear sense of the book’s publishing journey—from early Madrid and Brussels editions to influential English renderings—along with how the story traveled across Europe and into the theater. The work also examines Fielding’s own dramatic aims and how his Don Quixote in England uses humor to critique social life in eighteenth-century Britain.

• A chronological look at the key editions and translations that shaped Don Quixote’s reception.
• Critique of Fielding’s approach to the Cervantes source and his portrayal of Don Quixote and Sancho.
• Discussion of the play’s satirical targets, including country squires, politics, and social manners.
