Although Americans are living longer, they are retiring earlier--often as young as age 55. With 20 or more years of retirement living ahead, planning for this new stage in life is essential to make sure financial, social, and health needs of later life are met. The Henry Holt Retirement Sourcebook offers overviews of major decisions facing those looking forward to retirement--where to live, housing choices, legal and financial arrangements, and leisure activities--followed by a compendium of organizations offering information of interest to retirees. Entries are arranged alphabetically and include the group's name, address, and telephone number along with a profile of the organization and publications offered. Some selections are obvious: the Arthritis Foundation and American Association of Retired Persons. Others are of marginal interest to older people--Association for Brain Tumor Research, the Ford Consumer Appeals Board--while many are primarily for professionals. There is a short bibliography of consumer books on retirement and aging. Greater selectivity and more editing would have enhanced this title. A better choice is Tom and Nancy Biracree's Over Fifty: The Resource Book for the Better Half of Your Life ( LJ 3/15/91). The Rosenbergs selected 50 communities around the country offering features attractive to retirees planning to relocate. These range from agreeable climate to affordable housing and low crime rates. Entries are arranged by state and pack a surprising amount of useful information into the four-page summaries: real estate outlooks, taxes, medical care, cultural activities, addresses of chambers of commerce, local newspapers, and realtors. Quotes from satisfied residents and drawbacks for each are included as well. An excellent source even for those who aren't retiring.
