Heracleon Fragments. This item is unavailable.Heracleon Fragments

The Heracleon Fragments provides a compelling modern translation of a truly groundbreaking work: the first systematic commentary ever written on the Gospel of John. Authored in the second century by Heracleon, a brilliant student of the Gnostic master Valentinus, these teachings survived only through the writings of his theological rival, Origen of Alexandria. Today, they stand as a monumental testament to the sophisticated, allegorical, and deeply spiritual worldview of Valentinian Gnosticism.

Far more than a standard biblical commentary, this text delves into the profound cosmic drama hidden beneath the surface of the Gospel narrative. Heracleon interprets the words and miracles of Christ not merely as historical events, but as profound symbols of the soul's journey. From the cosmic origins of the "Word" to the deeply symbolic encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well, Heracleon unveils a universe where spiritual enlightenment (gnosis) is the ultimate path to salvation. He masterfully portrays the Savior as a divine messenger sent to awaken the dormant spiritual seed within humanity, rescuing it from the illusion and ignorance of the material world.
