The Heraldic Origin Of Gothic Architecture: In Answer To All Foregoing Systems On This Subject. On Occasion Of The Approaching Ceremonial Of The Coronation At Westminster Abbey by Rowley Lascelles. This essay, originally published in 1820, argues that the Gothic architectural form originated from Hebraic and biblical precedents rather than solely from European or oriental influences. It surveys competing theories—Gothic borrowed from the Romans, Saracens, Anglo-Saxons, or natural grottoes—and advances a thesis that the pointed arch embodies a symbolic replica of biblical vessels like the Ark and the Tabernacle. In two parts, the work first critiques prevailing systems, then outlines a historical system linking sacred architecture, coronation rites, and heraldry to Hebrew traditions, temple forms, and deluge symbolism. The author argues the Gothic canopy, arches, and windows reflect ancient ritual artifacts, and concludes that the style spread across Europe through crusading and ecclesiastical practice, rooted in Hebraic origins.
