Ce livre rencontra un vif succès et il fut réimprimé en italien, puis traduit et publié dans de nombreuses langues pendant de nombreuses années. Castore Durante (1529-1590) était un poète, physicien et botaniste italien. Les descriptions des plantes sont rédigées sous la forme de poèmes qu'Arber décrit comme étant « pleasingly unscientific ». Elles sont imprimées directement sous les gravures et sont suivies d'informations concernant les noms des plantes, leurs formes, leurs localisations et leurs vertus médicales. "The Linnean genus Duranta, formerly Castorea, is named after the author." (Hunt) L'édition est ornée de deux portraits gravés sur bois de J.A. Cortusi et de Durante et de 938 gravures sur bois de plantes, fleurs et fruits, certaines d'entre elles animées de manière amusante par l'ajout de figures humaines ou animales. La suite de 112 gravures qui se trouve dans les 10 feuillets terminant l'ouvrage parait ici pour la première fois. This book was extremely successful and was reprinted in Italian, then translated and published in many languages for many years. The suite of 112 engravings on the 10 leaves ending the work is published here for the first time. A precious copy of this very beautiful herbarium, preserved in contemporary limp overlapping vellum.
