The Hereditary Sheriffs Of Galloway; Their "Forebears" And Friends, Their Courts And Customs Of Their Times, With Notes Of The Early History, ... And Placenames Of The Province (Volume Ii)

Across the wild province of Galloway, law, lineage and legend were once bound together under the rule of hereditary sheriffs and their kin. These old records still matter. Sir Andrew Agnew's monumental study traces the sheriffs of Galloway, their forebears and allies, their courts and customs, against the broader tapestry of Scottish local history from medieval Galloway, Scotland, into the fluid world of early modern Scotland history. Moving between family narratives, feudal jurisdictions and church tradition, Volume II deepens the Galloway sheriffs genealogy, explores the Galloway baronage and placenames, and gathers vivid ecclesiastical legends of Galloway that illuminate how law, land and belief shaped a distinctive border society. Both an engrossing story of place and a meticulous genealogical reference book, it opens rare paths into Scottish genealogy research and Scottish peerage studies. For local historians, legal antiquaries and curious readers alike, Agnew's account of courts, charters and customs offers a lucid window into the legal history of Scotland and the workings of feudal law in Scotland at the edges of royal power. Long valued as a classic local historians reference, it stands as an indispensable companion to anyone tracing families, lands or titles in the south-west.
