Heroes of the Alcazar: an Authentic Account

The front cover is lightly raised and the leather lightly rubbed at the edges. In its centre it has the gilt crest of Ivanhoe Church of England Grammar School; the spine has a leather paste down with gilt author and title. There is a lovely book plate on the front paste down and a school award sticker on the front end paper. In the full leather rebind both hinges have been reinforced with brown vinyl and the end papers and paste downs with marbled paper. A very attractive copy. 215 pages, illustrated. The book, the authorised English version, was awarded to a fourth form student in 1941 while allied troops, including Australian ones, were fighting nazism, strong supporters of Franco. The last page is a battle hymn sung by the Nationalist forces. Interesting. 'The Siege of the Alcázar was a highly symbolic Nationalist victory in Toledo in the opening stages of the Spanish Civil War. The Alcázar of Toledo was held by a variety of military forces in favor of the Nationalist uprising. Militias of the parties in the Popular Front began their siege on July 21, 1936.
