Processies zijn een opmerkelijk stukje levend erfgoed. In heel wat Vlaamse gemeenten is de traditie van processies nog springlevend. Ook in de Euregio Maas-Rijn. Opmerkelijk voor processies in deze regio is dat ze maar om de zeven jaar plaatsvinden. Vandaag tref je deze zevenjaarlijkse processies nog aan in Tongeren (Kroningsfeesten), Hasselt (Virga Jessefeesten), Stavelot (Septennales), Maastricht (Heiligdomsvaart), Sint-Truiden (Trudofeesten), Hoei (Septennales), Susteren (Heiligdomsvaart), Verviers (Septennales) en Aken (Heiligtumsfahrt). Deze zevenjaarlijkse feesten baseren zich op een lange traditie van verering voor Maria en van heiligdomsvaarten. Overal maken de feesten deel uit van de stedelijke identiteit en net daarin schuilt hun kracht en konden ze overleven.
