The Hidden Cost Of Data Centers: How Artificial Intelligence And Cloud How Computing Affect Our Electricity, Water, Environment, And Communities (English Version: Computers & Technogy Book I)

Artificial intelligence and cloud computing may feel invisible—but the infrastructure supporting them is physical.

Behind every AI response, online video, stored photograph, and digital transaction are data centers that consume electricity, require water, generate heat, occupy land, and depend on complex global supply chains. As these facilities expand, communities face difficult questions about utility costs, drought, pollution, noise, tax incentives, and public accountability.

In The Hidden Cost of Data Centers, Armando Olmos examines the physical and social consequences of the rapidly growing digital economy. Drawing on government reports, national laboratories, academic research, and regulatory proceedings, this accessible guide explains:

• Why artificial intelligence is accelerating data-center construction
• How centers affect electricity demand and household utility costs
• Why cooling systems can place pressure on local water supplies
• How diesel generators contribute to air pollution
• The effects of industrial noise, construction, and land use
• The debate over tax breaks, permanent employment, and public subsidies
• Electronic waste and the global supply chain behind digital technology
• Practical policies that can protect communities and the environment

The book concludes with a community review checklist containing essential questions residents and public officials should ask before approving a new data-center project.

Technology should serve the public—not quietly transfer its environmental and financial costs to working families.
