This edition highlights the important role visual material played in Neurath's life—from his earliest years to his professional work on the Isotype picture language. This engaging and informal account gives a rich picture of Central-European culture aroundthe turn of the twentieth century, seen through the eyes of Neurath's insatiable intelligence, as well as a detailed exposition of the technique of Isotype. From Hieroglyphics to Isotype includes an appendix showing examples from Neurath's extensive collection of visual material.

About the Author

Christopher Burke is a typographer & typeface designer and a writer on modern typographic history. He worked at Monotype Typography in the UK, before studying for a PhD in Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading (England), which he obtained in 1995. From 1996 to 2001 he taught at the University of Reading, where he planned and conceived the MA in typeface design. Matthew Eve is a post-doctoral research assistant in the department of typography and graphic communication at the University of Reading.
