Presents views of the skyscrapers of New York City and aerial views of life on the city's streets
Reviews:
Kaplan looks down on Manhattan for a purely professional purpose: to provide a bird's-eye view of living architecture. His aerial perspective yields unusual scenes of familiar icons: monuments are minimalized, the mundane becomes monumental. Some compositions resist the transformation of his vision; this interesting assortment has varying degrees of impact. His "men at work" are reminiscent of Lewis Hines's historical art; a dreamy landscape remembers Ruth Orkin's window. A dramatically lit bike-athon is notable for its color, context and composition, while an amusing note is provided by the gold-leaf restorer atop the Crown Building; the portrait of overlapping skyscrapers makes the most effective use of Kaplan's approach. The accompanying commentary enhances appreciation of photos and subjects with historical notes and gossip. Technical information is provided at book's end. Kaplan is a former acrophobic.
